A Holistic, Arts-Based Experience
DESCRIPTION
Graffiti Voice teaches young people about graffiti art through an experiential, empowerment-based, group approach. On the first day of this two-day workshop participants are introduced to the history of graffiti, learn techniques for creating their own letter style, and are invited to critically converse about graffiti’s social significance, controversy, and potential for social change. On the following day participants will have the opportunity to produce their own graffiti canvas featuring a theme or idea that expresses something of individual, social, or societal relevance. F.R.E.E. PHILOSOPHY
FLOW Flow theory suggests that optimal engagement, personal growth, and happiness occur when a sense of interest, capacity, and challenge converge while performing a given task. Research suggests the arts and other activities that inspire creativity are prevalent pursuits among people who regularly experience moments of flow. RELATIONSHIP & IDENTITY BUILDING Opportunities to try activities that may develop into an interest are essential to fostering healthy development. Interests greatly contribute to young people’s self-image while enabling them to form connections with others who share their interests, which in turn further bolsters their sense of self. ENGAGEMENT Learning things that are inherently interesting to young people (AND ADULTS) makes education and the pursuit of self-development an enjoyable, intrinsically rewarding experience. EMPOWERMENT When young people are given a voice to help shape the content and approach of their learning experience, education becomes more personally meaningful. This approach engages young people not as mere recipients of knowledge, but co-creators of knowledge. |
